Brief Description:  Oil system plug installation...

I discovered that the oil system accessory case plug that I had removed to install the oil temperature sensor was the same size as the one that was missing from the oil filter right angle adapter so I installed the plug in that location. Once the plug was installed I pushed the aircraft outside to give the engine a crank. The engine would however not crank normally even after several attempts. One of the EAA Chapter 65 members who was trying to help out noticed that the steel braided oil pressure line to the oil pressure transducer was hot. After some consideration I deduced that since the engine had not been running the oil line could only be hot if it was carrying current. Further considering that the engine was not cranking properly I deduced that the starter current was using the oil pressure line as its ground. This therefore meant that the engine ground strap was not functioning as required. Since the engine was new and had been painted I concluded that the paint was acting as an insulator. I removed the ground strap, removed the paint from the crankcase where the ground strap attached and reinstalled the ground strap. The next engine crank attempt was successful. I did however notice that the engine was not firing and there was even an occasional kick back. One problem solved, new problem to figure out. I called it a day to considered my next problem.
